Kathryn Roberts & Kate Rusby
Introduction:

Rufus's Selected English Folk Singers is pleased to include Kate Rusby as the leading light of the younger generation of folk singers, even though she has a perfectly good web site of her own. ( www.purerecords.demon.co.uk)

The media got quite excited about the new blood, seeing them as heralding another folk-revival, as detailed by Dirty Linen at this URL.   Kathryn Roberts and Kate Rusby created the album that became Folkroots' Album of the Year in 1995, after they won the prestigious competition "The Young Tradition Award", arranged by BBC.

Kate joined The Poozies for the period 1996-1999, replacing founder member Sally Barker on guitar and vocals, and she also cut her solo album, Hour Glass. in 1997.

The second album, Sleepless won "Best Album" and Kate herself won "Best Folk Singer" in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards of 7th February 2000.

A third album was issued May 2001.

There is an unofficial home-page site at home.freeuk.com/vladimpaler/katerusby/katehome.htm which has video songs.

With recent releases, and the Internet being what it is, you certainly get things hyped. This album certainly collected a rave review in Dirty Linen by Lahri Bond

Here is an extract:
Rarely has a debut album reached this level of near perfection. Kathryn Roberts won the 1994 Radio 2 Young Tradition Award for her exceptional fiddle playing and she and Kate Rusby have been touring extensively as a duo since 1993. Not only are they both outstanding vocalists, they also play a variety of instruments, with Rusby being equally dexterous on piano and guitar and Roberts adding piano, flute, clarinet and soprano sax to her fine fiddle playing.

Well, I like it, which is why it's on my site as being representative of the new young folkies. The girls are joined by John McCusker who also plays fiddle and cittern, while Allison Kinnard contributes cello, and Robin Morton adds bodhrán.

Nice to see Matt Hyland surfacing again – sung beautifully, but sad, of course. Mostly sad tracks in fact, apart from the mysterious 2 minute silence on track 11.

RUFUS  RECOMMENDS

K RUSBY & K ROBERTS
vvvv Dark Eyed Sailor   (Trad)
Some solos, some harmonising. Dark Eyed Sailor is a gem. But The Queen and the Soldier is misplaced and wastes valuable CD space.
HOURGLASS
vvvv Bold Riley   (Trad)
Hourglass has splendid 'covers' of Nic Jones' settings of Annan Water and The Drowned Lovers, but it is a sad-ish album, with the aforementioned songs, plus the slowed-down Bold Riley and I Am Stretched On Your Grave. Ideal for making Tear-Water Tea.
SLEEPLESS
vvvv Wild Goose   (Trad)
This is a most beautiful ballad rendering of the Wild Goose sea shanty, tweaked by Kate to perfection.
