I purchased the
John Goodluck vinyl The Suffolk Miracle second-hand and unheard, because anyone who records
Willie O Winesbury
gets my vote.
In 1971 John toured the northern folk clubs with Roy Harris at Roy's request.
Then, John turned professional folk singer, and with players from Ipswich
traditional folk music club began a series of gigs. A recording contract followed,
with Traditional Records and The Suffolk Miracle was cut,
with
Alan Walters
playing concertina and Dave Pearce playing banjo and mandolin.
On the strength of this album, John was voted best male singer of the year
by Eric Winter from new musical express. This was 18th January 1975
Monday's Childe was cut next, but was delayed and so occupies the third slot
in the discography.
Joe Stead of Sweet Folk & Country records
was responsible, not only for the release of Speed the Plough,
but also for
introducing Brian Dewhurst (guitar), Chris Parkinson (melodeon) and Hugh
O'Donnell (fiddle) to John. It was the resultant happy sound which sowed the
seeds of the group "Trunkles", formed in 1976.
Trunkles were to go on to be widely travelled - into European in fact, and
with an assortment of jesters, jugglers, jousters, and a morris band.
Although the line-up often changed (and it did at one time include a horse)
the group were extremely popular wherever they performed. It
included Len Davies, who played the electric bones at the grand age of 63.
Trunkles appearing with The Amazing Baldinies and escapeologist Rubin
Smallpiece. New man Len Davies from Diss, an energetic, visual performer,
will be playing the electric bones. As well their folk rock music, Trunkles
double as a band of medieval troupers and in this latter capacity, they
visit the south of France in August.
Quote from Evening Star Friday, June 17th 1983
Trunkles last came together again for a series of gigs in 1994 to 1997,
including the British film premier of Macbeth in London and Stratford apon
Avon, but, solo or with friends, John Goodluck still enthrals and
entertains, wherever he may roam.
