Thumb-nail sketch:A painfully shy person in front of an audience, Anne's singing was hypnotic and from all accounts had a profound influence on other UK folk notables such as June Tabor, Maddy Prior and Sandy Denny. Sandy's song The Pond and the Stream (track 7, Fotheringay album) was inspired by Anne Briggs:
Annie wanders on the land
She loves the freedom of the air....Anne was shy of her own recordings. She "delayed" the release of her 1974 recordings with the impromptu group Ragged Robin for a mere 22 years. (see Sing a Song For You below).
Well, we have four album's worth of songs, and for that we must be very thankful.

| This is Anne's first album, though she had already cut the Topic extended play The Hazards of Love (TOP 94), and had been a contributor to The Bird in the Bush and The Iron Muse (Topic 12T86). This is a fine album, now available on CD (see below). It contains 8 classic folk songs (Willie O' Winesbury is particularly charming) and 2 of Anne's own compositions, Living by the Water and Go Your Way. The majority of tracks are unaccompanied. Anne plays guitar and bouzouki; John Moynihan plays second bouzouki on track 3. There are decent sleeve notes by Bert Lloyd. All the tracks are now available on the 1999 CD ANNE BRIGGS : A COLLECTION. | |

Note 1 : These two tracks are not on the 1990 CD CLASSIC ANNE BRIGGS.
They were orginally issued on the Decca Edinburgh Folk Festival 1 & 2 albums (LK4546
and LK4563).
The 1999 CD ANNE BRIGGS : A COLLECTION has 32 pages of historical notes and 7 pages of A.L.Lloyd's track notes from the earlier issues. A few archive photographs are also included. This album is an essential purchase. It may be obtained from Musikfolk Limited and other outlets. A lengthy review of A COLLECTION is currently on the Musical Traditions site. This site cautions that URLs may move, so go to the home page and navigate to either 'current reviews' or 'previous reviews'. For 1999, I guess it'll be 'current reviews'. | |
